Free ChatGPT moves to GPT-6: what changes for you?
If you use ChatGPT without paying, today is when things change: since this October 8, the free version is moving to GPT-6. And it is not just a number changing in the menu. OpenAI announced it yesterday: the answers will no longer be just text. You are going to see buttons, graphs, forms and even small tools that work directly in the conversation. OpenAI calls this “Intelligent UI”, an intelligent interface, and it is suddenly landing for more than one billion two hundred million people who use ChatGPT every week. My first reaction when reading the announcement: “wait, are they turning the chat into an app store now?” Well yes, a bit.
“Who had the tiramisu?”
Your answer becomes a little app
Take the end of a dinner for twelve, on a Saturday night, with the cousin who only had a salad and wants everyone to know it, the girlfriend who ordered two desserts “to taste” and the server who is starting to look at his watch. Before, you would ask ChatGPT to split the bill, and it would spit out a paragraph of calculations that nobody read over. Now, it gives you a little calculator: you click on who had what, check the one who did not drink wine, and everyone's amount appears by itself. This is one of the examples given by OpenAI, along with a savings calculator, a list of the steps next to a recipe so you know when to start the pasta, or the stops on a road trip placed on a map.
The principle is simple. OpenAI prepared a box of ready-made pieces, buttons, sliders, tables, graphs, and GPT-6 was trained to choose which ones to assemble according to your question. If one sentence is enough, you will get one sentence. If you compare three phone plans, you will get the three side by side. In short, instead of reading the answer, you play with it!
On the left, what you used to skim. On the right, what you are really going to use
To be honest, the idea is not new: Google has already been doing something very similar in Gemini since May. But when ChatGPT gets in on it, it suddenly arrives in the pocket of the whole planet.
Free, yes, but not the same GPT-6
A small detail that the announcement slips in along the way: paying subscribers have GPT-6 Sol, and free accounts have GPT-6 Luna, the fast and cheap model in the family. Both know how to make these interactive answers, but Luna is still the little brother, and on paper it does not think as deeply about difficult questions. For a restaurant bill or a recipe, you will not see the difference.
OpenAI also announces that GPT-6 starts answering before it has finished thinking, and that for a question requiring a web search, the answer arrives an average of 44% sooner. This is an OpenAI figure, measured by OpenAI, so I take it with a pinch of salt. And there are holes in the net: the old ChatGPT apps for Windows and Mac do not display these new answers, you need an up-to-date version or you have to use the browser.
Watch out for the pretty graph
Okay, let's be serious for two minutes, because this is where I get hung up. A chart looks more serious than a sentence. It's psychological: neatly aligned bars, colors, a legend, and your brain says to itself, "this is solid stuff". Except an AI model can still get a number wrong, and a wrong number in a nice chart is still a wrong number. It's just better dressed.
Beautiful packaging. Now, look at what's inside
The savings calculator, for example. It'll show you a nice upward curve, but with what interest rate? The one on your savings account, or a rate the model made up all by itself? The reflex to develop is simple, and it costs nothing: when a chart suits you a little too well, ask it "where do these figures come from?". If the answer is vague, so is the chart.
My take
For all those who tune out as soon as an answer is more than three lines long, and there are many of them, it's a real improvement, and I honestly think it's really well thought out. A slider you move explains itself, a block of text doesn't. And the developer in me looks at this with a little smirk: ChatGPT no longer just answers, it makes little apps on demand, in a few seconds, for one person and one question.
So to the creators of bill-splitting apps who sell their calculator on the App Store: maybe it's time to come up with another idea!
